What is Transshipment?

What is Transshipment?

Internation business is full of complexities and different types of situations where you have to deal in different ways. Everyone does not have complete knowledge about the complete procedure and due to it, they face lots of confusion with some new terms, like - transshipment. Here, we will introduce numerous factors regarding this term.

Let’s start…

All types of international voyages are not similar. When it comes to the long transportations, then sometimes, the vessel changes during the transition. In these conditions, half the distance is covered by one vessel and another half by a different one. The process of moving a container or cargo from one vessel to another is called transshipment.

If we talk about the port status, then transshipped containers will be counted twice. First, when it is unloaded from the previous vessel. Secondly, when it is loaded to the new one. During the complete process, the cranes are used twice and due to it, the transshipped container is also counted twice.

Why Should Transshipment Require?

To avoid unnecessary expenses and cut down the shipment time & charges, everyone tries to figure out why it is important to choose the option of transshipment. Mainly, there are three major conditions, when the option of transshipment can be chosen.

1. No Direct Source

Sometimes, it is not possible to send the container directly to the destination place. Due to it, the exporters or importers have to pick the option of transshipment by which they can conduct some small shipments to complete a big one quickly.

2. Port Issue

In some cases, the destination port is not in condition or suitable to unload the vessel there. Here, the vessel will be unloaded via some other sources. It is also a condition where transshipment is the only option for completing the trade transaction.

3. Trade Restrictions

All countries are having some different trade rules and regulations. According to these types of laws, the traders cannot send goods directly from one country to another. The biggest example is China and the USA. In these conditions, the traders have to use another country’s port for transshipment.

If you are facing one of these conditions, then you have to go with the option of transshipment, otherwise, you can go with the direct shipment options.

No one wants to face any kind of losses during the transportations. Due to it, everyone wants to get the best tracking sources by which they can figure where the shipment arrives and when it will be delivered. Here, for tracking, when the transshipped container is loaded to the new vessel, then the consignee will sign and send a bill of lading as well.

It works as the best source by which you can easily figure out what the current status of your shipment is. Along with it, your service provider plays a big role as well.
